Waaaay back in the mid 1990’s the world was a different place. Mullets and 8” bangs were on their way out but had yet to become the awesomely bad social stigma they are today. The Real World on MTV was still considered a brave new foray in the yet-to-be-named domain of “reality television.” Toy Story was the first feature length film using only computer generated imagery. The Grunge inspired looks stemming from the success of a new rock and roll band named Nirvana paved the way for the alternative lifestyle of coffee houses and Generation X. In the midst of all of this chaos, just as Coolio was blazing up the Billboard pop charts with Gangsta’s Paradise, Cheri Cosgrove decided to create her own tanning paradise in Sioux City, IA.
In the world of tanning in 1995 there was one level to choose from in which to tan. You were forced to make an appointment to use this tanning booth, and if you missed your appointment you paid for it. If you were lucky your bed had been cleaned since its last use…if you were lucky. Never one to settle for mediocrity, Cheri was inspired to create her own world of tanning where walk-ins were the only appointments accepted, where state-of-the-art equipment was not just for big cities and big spenders, where cleanliness was expected not extraordinary, and where the employees’ knowledge of their products and equipment would enable them to provide the finest customer service in the land! With these goals in mind tanworld was born!
The response from consumers to this new tanning concept was immediate and overwhelming. Within three years tanworld had multiple locations and had begun franchising the concept. Today the tanworld corporate office concentrates solely on the franchising aspect of tanworld. It is tanworld’s philosophy that a franchisor should be in one business, ensuring the success of its franchisees. The responsibility of running company stores takes attention away from this goal and the success of tanworld franchisees has been the proof in the pudding.
Currently there are over 60 tanworld salons in operation throughout 11 states spanning from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Each year brings fresh faces to the tanworld pool of franchisees and additional units to the existing franchisees.
